Pelican Island is one of Toms River's most water-surrounded neighborhoods, a low strip between the mainland and the barrier along the Route 37 causeway, with Barnegat Bay and its lagoons on nearly every side. A bulkhead here is holding a narrow lot together against the bay.
Water on Every Side
Being wrapped by the bay means Pelican Island lots take water and weather from more than one direction, and the walls do not get the shelter an inner lagoon lot enjoys. The failures run to leaning walls, scoured toes, and yards draining out behind a tired cap, worked by a tide that is always close on a low, narrow lot.
Low Lots, Higher Walls
On a low lot this exposed, a replacement is often the chance to raise the cap to the township's post-Sandy standard for real flood protection. We rebuild in vinyl sheet pile with the toe and anchors sized for the exposure, not a foam injection pumped into a shrinking yard.
